\u201cAnd Gregory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed his hands together.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlackwell\u2019s attorneys offered me a separation package.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cResignation. Cooperation with internal review. No admission beyond approved statements.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA cleaner story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you taking it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

I waited.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already rejected it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked toward Matthew.<\/p>\n

I almost stopped him.<\/p>\n

I did not want my son turned into the reason Mark discovered morality.<\/p>\n

Mark seemed to understand.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot because of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Good.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I spent years making choices based on what they would cost me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I tell the truth only because it helps me become his father, then I\u2019m still doing the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was perhaps the first thing Mark had said that sounded like change rather than remorse.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat will it cost?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy career there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPossibly civil liability.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave a tired smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re very comforting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not here for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence settled.<\/p>\n

Then he said, \u201cSarah filed.\u201d<\/p>\n

I knew.<\/p>\n

Divorce.<\/p>\n

She had told me herself.<\/p>\n

No drama.<\/p>\n

No revenge.<\/p>\n

No triumphant speech.<\/p>\n

She simply decided she would not remain married to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBad.\u201d<\/p>\n

I appreciated the answer.<\/p>\n

Not devastated.<\/p>\n

Not fine.<\/p>\n

Bad.<\/p>\n

Human.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He seemed surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean you treated her with love.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression fell.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are different things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked toward the bassinet again.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I see him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can look.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark stood.<\/p>\n

He approached slowly.<\/p>\n

Matthew slept with one fist beside his cheek.<\/p>\n

Mark remained several feet away at first.<\/p>\n

The same distance he had kept in the hospital.<\/p>\n

I noticed.<\/p>\n

So did he.<\/p>\n

Then he moved closer.<\/p>\n

Not touching.<\/p>\n

Just looking.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes he still have the heart issue?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re monitoring it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I come to an appointment sometime?\u201d<\/p>\n

The question was careful.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

No argument.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Mark testified for nearly six hours.<\/p>\n

I watched from another room with Sarah.<\/p>\n

He admitted the affair.<\/p>\n

Admitted lying to Sarah.<\/p>\n

Admitted lying to me.<\/p>\n

Admitted arranging initial surveillance.<\/p>\n

Admitted sharing information with Blackwell because he feared his promotion review.<\/p>\n

Admitted commissioning the first confidentiality proposal.<\/p>\n

Admitted receiving information he should have questioned.<\/p>\n

Admitted failing to report the surveillance after it escalated beyond his instructions.<\/p>\n

When counsel asked whether he considered Matthew\u2019s Down syndrome a professional embarrassment, Mark paused.<\/p>\n

Then said yes.<\/p>\n

Sarah looked down.<\/p>\n

I did too.<\/p>\n

It hurt even though I already knew.<\/p>\n

Maybe truth hurts differently when spoken publicly.<\/p>\n

Mark continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was ashamed of what people might think about me, and I turned that shame toward a child who had done nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody in the hearing room moved.<\/p>\n

He did not say he had learned better.<\/p>\n

He did not ask anyone to forgive him.<\/p>\n

He simply placed the fact where it belonged.<\/p>\n

On himself.<\/p>\n

Then counsel asked why he eventually cooperated.<\/p>\n

Mark answered:<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the people I hurt stopped protecting me from the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n

Neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n

Gregory testified two days later under an agreement that required complete cooperation.<\/p>\n

He confirmed Richard\u2019s Oracle role.<\/p>\n

Confirmed Margaret\u2019s root authority.<\/p>\n

Confirmed his own destruction orders.<\/p>\n

Confirmed that he had forced Jonathan into disappearance six years earlier to protect Natalie and Blackwell.<\/p>\n

He admitted calling emergency services at the terminal after Marissa attacked Jonathan.<\/p>\n

He also admitted approving intensified surveillance of me after the prenatal diagnosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d an investigator asked.<\/p>\n

Gregory answered:<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I believed a public disability-related discrimination allegation would expose older medical-access cases.\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

Not concern for Matthew.<\/p>\n

Concern about what his existence could reveal.<\/p>\n

Natalie resigned from HelixBridge and turned over the migration architecture.<\/p>\n

Her notes allowed investigators to identify hundreds of unauthorized queries.<\/p>\n

Not every query represented discrimination.<\/p>\n

Not every person suffered direct harm.<\/p>\n

That distinction remained important.<\/p>\n

But the access itself was enough to trigger investigations far beyond my case.<\/p>\n

Insurance regulators.<\/p>\n

Privacy authorities.<\/p>\n

Employment agencies.<\/p>\n

Civil litigation.<\/p>\n

Board inquiries.<\/p>\n

Blackwell could no longer describe the issue as one executive\u2019s affair.<\/p>\n

The story was larger.<\/p>\n

But my life became smaller again.<\/p>\n

I wanted that.<\/p>\n

One evening Sarah came over with Ava.<\/p>\n

Ava carried a stuffed giraffe.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Matthew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to give him your toys.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked offended.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith whose money?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy allowance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cImportant distinction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ava placed the giraffe beside Matthew.<\/p>\n

Then she asked whether babies with Down syndrome liked giraffes.<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cThis one hasn\u2019t formed a strong opinion yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

She considered that.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah laughed.<\/p>\n

It was the first time I heard her laugh without exhaustion.<\/p>\n

Later, while Ava sat on the floor talking to Matthew, Sarah and I stood in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople keep asking whether we\u2019re friends,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat it\u2019s none of their business.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked toward Ava.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI still get angry when I look at you sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at me.<\/p>\n

Then, unexpectedly, smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was almost an argument.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re improving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile disappeared slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t forgive what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I don\u2019t want Matthew growing up feeling like his existence is something that happened to my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

My throat tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at Ava beside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re siblings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to find a way to make that true without pretending everything around it was okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the beginning.<\/p>\n

Not of friendship.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

Of an agreement built around two children who had never asked adults to make their lives complicated.<\/p>\n

The following week, the court accepted Mark\u2019s paternity acknowledgment.<\/p>\n

Matthew Parker\u2019s legal record now named his father.<\/p>\n

No confidentiality.<\/p>\n

No hidden contingency.<\/p>\n

No corporate condition.<\/p>\n

Mark received a preliminary support order.<\/p>\n

He paid it.<\/p>\n

Then he asked through attorneys for supervised visits.<\/p>\n

I expected anger.<\/p>\n

Instead I felt tired.<\/p>\n

David asked what I wanted.<\/p>\n

I looked at Matthew.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want him protected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom everyone deciding who Mark is going to be before Mark proves it.\u201d<\/p>\n

David nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

One-hour supervised visits were arranged.<\/p>\n

The first took place at a family center.<\/p>\n

Mark arrived twenty minutes early.<\/p>\n

He brought nothing except a diaper bag Sarah had told him to buy himself.<\/p>\n

When the supervisor handed Matthew to him, Mark looked terrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cSupport his head,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re holding him like an unexploded device.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like he is one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite myself, I laughed.<\/p>\n

Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n

Then laughed too.<\/p>\n

Matthew immediately spit milk on his shirt.<\/p>\n

I laughed harder.<\/p>\n

It was not forgiveness.<\/p>\n

That mattered.<\/p>\n

A funny moment did not erase harm.<\/p>\n

But neither did harm require every future moment to remain miserable.<\/p>\n

Mark wiped his shirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew stared at him.<\/p>\n

No revelation.<\/p>\n

No magical recognition.<\/p>\n

Just a baby looking at a nervous man.<\/p>\n

Mark\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n

He did not make a speech.<\/p>\n

Good.<\/p>\n

At the end of the hour, he handed Matthew back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

As we left, I saw Mark remain alone in the visitation room for several minutes.<\/p>\n

He had chosen to testify without knowing whether I would ever allow that hour.<\/p>\n

That was why the hour had been possible.<\/p>\n

Not because he deserved it automatically.<\/p>\n

Because he had finally begun doing necessary things without demanding a reward.<\/p>\n
